Stitching the Great Outdoors
Nov 04, 2024Anytime I step outside, I look for inspiration. Be it a dog walk in a city park or a countryside pasture hike, you can bet I have my camera at the ready, snapping endless photos of nature.📷🍂🌳
No matter what the season, there is always something interesting to see and ideas to be drawn from the views that surround us. Landscapes are so peaceful to me, and no matter how many times I take in the same view, there are always new variations with different lighting, clouds and colours. This photo is of a pasture in rural Manitoba near the farm where I had the pleasure of growing up. This special place was the inspiration for my "September Sunrise" landscape.
There are a couple main reasons why we are drawn to making landscapes. First, landscapes can evoke emotions and bring up memories of an important place or cherished moment. I often find myself recreating views that I recall from my childhood or travels. My love for the sky stems from the wide prairie views and their all-encompassing divine energy that surrounded me in my youth.
The second reason we gravitate towards landscapes is because the colours and textures are inspired by nature. My landscapes transport me to think about the great outdoors, even though I live in a city, and there is a certain peacefulness that creates. Being in the outdoors always lifts my spirits, and working on a project that makes me think about nature and the infinite details of it, bring the same positive energy.
Artists and art collectors have loved landscape art for centuries. A large reason for that is because we can all relate to it in some way. We don't have to look for deeper meaning, but it is there if we want to see it, reminding us of a time or place.
I have been creating landscapes for over thirty years, and I still wake up thinking of new ideas and scenes I want to stitch. Like nature, the combinations are infinite!
I love to think of my work hanging in other people's homes, bringing joy every day and transporting the owner to the great outdoors and peaceful energy it brings.
